A Turkish journalist has been formally indicted over investigative reporting that included claims about alleged irregularities involving institutions linked to President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan’s family, a case that press freedom groups say reflects growing legal pressure on independent journalism in Turkey.
According to reports, İsmail Arı, a reporter for the BirGün newspaper, has been charged with “publicly disseminating misleading information” and violating confidentiality rules. Prosecutors are seeking a prison sentence of more than six years, based on his news reports, broadcast commentary, and social media posts.
The indictment is linked to Arı’s reporting on the involvement of Erdoğan family members in the management of several foundations, including claims about public resources being directed toward these organizations. It also references his coverage of alleged financial irregularities involving state-affiliated institutions, including the Yunus Emre Institute.
Authorities further cited his reporting on construction projects and judicial appointments, as well as allegations that his posts created a “misleading perception” of corruption, which prosecutors argue falls under Turkey’s disinformation laws. Some of the material used in the case reportedly includes official statements from state disinformation monitoring bodies.
Arı has also faced detention and pretrial imprisonment in connection with the case, which was widely criticized by journalists’ associations and press freedom organizations. His arrest and legal proceedings form part of a broader pattern of prosecutions involving journalists accused under disinformation and defamation-related statutes.
A separate report notes that he is simultaneously facing another indictment over allegedly reposting or sharing earlier news material involving public officials, further expanding the legal pressure against him.
Press freedom monitors have repeatedly warned that Turkey continues to rely heavily on vague disinformation laws and criminal provisions to pursue journalists covering corruption, public institutions, and political figures. Critics argue that such cases contribute to a chilling effect on investigative reporting, particularly in politically sensitive areas.
The case remains pending before Turkish courts, with Arı facing multiple charges linked directly to his journalistic work and reporting activities.
