Two international activists detained by Israeli authorities following their participation in a Gaza-bound humanitarian flotilla have been released from detention and are set to be deported, according to legal representatives and human rights groups. The case has drawn attention from international observers amid ongoing debates over the legality of maritime interceptions and the treatment of activists attempting to challenge the blockade on Gaza.
The activists, identified as Saif Abu Keshek and Thiago Ávila, were detained after Israeli naval forces intercepted vessels linked to the Global Sumud Flotilla in international waters. The flotilla had departed from Spain in April with the stated aim of delivering humanitarian aid to Gaza and drawing attention to the blockade affecting the territory. Israeli authorities later transferred the detainees into custody, where they were held for several days under administrative procedures.
Legal representatives from the Adalah legal center confirmed that Israeli authorities informed them of the planned release, after which the activists were expected to be handed over to immigration authorities for deportation to their respective home countries. The court had previously extended their detention while reviewing allegations presented by the state, which included claims of security-related concerns. The activists denied these accusations, insisting that their mission was humanitarian and that their arrest occurred in international waters.
The case has triggered criticism from rights organizations and international legal observers, some of whom argue that the detention of aid flotilla participants raises questions about proportionality and due process. Others have pointed to broader concerns over restrictions on humanitarian access to Gaza and the increasing frequency of maritime interceptions involving activist-led aid missions.
Israeli officials have maintained that actions taken against the flotilla were conducted under security justifications, asserting that certain participants were linked to prohibited organizations or engaged in unlawful activity. No formal criminal convictions were announced in connection with the detention at the time of release.
The activists’ deportation marks the conclusion of a short period of detention that has nonetheless intensified international debate over maritime activism, humanitarian access routes to Gaza, and the legal boundaries governing state responses to civilian-led aid initiatives in conflict-related maritime zones.
