Veteran Ugandan Journalist Shot Dead in Targeted Nighttime Attack as Police Investigate Motive
April 20, 2026April 23, 2026 – Lebanon –
Lebanese journalist Amal Khalil was killed while on assignment in southern Lebanon following an Israeli airstrike, in an incident that has intensified concerns over the safety of media workers covering the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hezbollah. Khalil, a reporter for the newspaper Al-Akhbar, was documenting developments near the village of al-Tiri when the attack occurred.
According to multiple reports, Khalil and freelance photojournalist Zeinab Faraj were covering the aftermath of earlier strikes when a nearby vehicle was hit. The two sought shelter in a residential building, which was subsequently struck again in what observers have described as a “double strike.” Khalil was killed in the second attack, while Faraj sustained injuries and was later rescued.
Rescue operations were significantly delayed, with Lebanese officials and press freedom groups alleging that access to the site was hindered during critical hours. Khalil’s body was only recovered from the rubble after several hours, further intensifying criticism of the conditions under which journalists are operating in the conflict zone.
The Israeli military stated that its strikes were aimed at targets linked to Hezbollah operating within a restricted area and denied intentionally targeting journalists. Officials also rejected claims that rescue efforts were obstructed. Despite these statements, the incident has drawn condemnation from media organizations and advocacy groups, some of which have raised concerns about potential violations of international humanitarian law.
Khalil was regarded as an experienced journalist who had spent years covering conflict in southern Lebanon. Her death marks one of several recent fatalities among media workers in the country, highlighting what observers describe as an increasingly dangerous environment for journalists reporting on the ground.
The killing comes amid escalating hostilities that resumed in early March, with thousands reported killed and widespread displacement affecting civilian populations. In this context, journalists have continued to operate in high-risk conditions to document developments, often without adequate protection.
As reactions continue, press freedom advocates are calling for independent investigations into the incident and broader protections for journalists working in conflict zones. Khalil’s death has become emblematic of the risks faced by reporters covering armed conflict, where the line between civilian and combatant spaces is increasingly blurred.
