April 19, 2026April 20, 2026 – Uganda –
A veteran Ugandan journalist, Joe Nam, has been shot dead in a late-night attack near his home, prompting an active police investigation and renewed concern over the safety of media professionals in the country. The killing occurred in the early hours of April 19 in Kawanda Central, Wakiso District, on the outskirts of Kampala.
According to police and local reports, Nam, 55, was attacked by an unidentified gunman who was reportedly masked and fled the scene immediately after the shooting. The journalist was fatally shot at around 1 a.m., with initial findings indicating that the assailant acted alone.
Family members discovered Nam shortly after the shooting, but he had already died from his injuries by the time authorities arrived. His body was later transported to Mulago City Mortuary for a post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation.
Police officials confirmed that teams have been deployed to gather evidence and pursue leads, though the motive behind the killing remains unclear. Authorities have stated that efforts are underway to identify the suspect and determine whether the attack was linked to his professional background or other factors.
Nam was a well-known figure in Uganda’s media landscape, having worked for years with the state-owned New Vision newspaper. During his career, he covered a range of topics, including politics, business, and environmental issues, before later transitioning into consultancy and authorship.
Reports also indicate that the attackers may have taken his personal belongings, including his phone, raising additional questions about whether the killing was targeted or opportunistic. The circumstances surrounding the incident continue to be examined by investigators.
The killing has drawn attention within Uganda’s media community, where concerns persist about the vulnerability of journalists, particularly those who have covered sensitive political and governance issues. Observers note that such incidents contribute to a climate of uncertainty and risk for media practitioners.
As investigations continue, authorities have urged the public to provide any information that could assist in identifying the perpetrator. The case remains open, with police emphasizing that establishing the motive will be central to determining whether the killing was premeditated or linked to broader patterns of violence affecting journalists.
