The 2026 International Four Freedoms Award ceremony was held in Middelburg, Netherlands, bringing together political leaders, activists, and international organizations to recognize contributions to democracy, human rights, and press freedom inspired by Franklin D. Roosevelt’s 1941 “Four Freedoms” framework. The event took place on April 16, 2026, and highlighted ongoing global struggles to uphold freedom of expression, worship, want, and fear.
A central moment of the ceremony was the presentation of the award to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy, who accepted the honor on behalf of the Ukrainian people for their resilience during the ongoing war with Russia. His participation underscored the award’s emphasis on collective struggle rather than individual recognition, as he dedicated the honor to those affected by the conflict and called attention to the continued need for international support.
The ceremony also placed strong emphasis on press freedom. The Committee to Protect Journalists was among the laureates recognized for its work defending freedom of speech globally, reflecting growing concerns over threats to journalists in conflict zones and authoritarian environments. Other honorees included human rights activists and advocates working on issues ranging from gender-based violence to freedom from fear and economic insecurity.
