Two North Florida television stations have earned significant recognition at the Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists (FABJ) awards, highlighting strong performances across investigative reporting, breaking news coverage, and community storytelling.
WCTV, based in Tallahassee, emerged as one of the biggest winners of the ceremony after securing more than 20 statewide honours, including the highly regarded Station of the Year title. The station also received the Community Service Station of the Year award, along with multiple category wins spanning news, investigative reporting, environmental coverage, sports journalism, and digital storytelling. Judges recognised the station’s team coverage of major breaking news events, including severe weather and an active shooter incident, alongside long-form reporting and special programming focused on public service and community impact.
The awards reflected broad newsroom participation, with reporters, producers, anchors, and digital teams contributing to the station’s recognised work. WCTV leadership credited its staff’s commitment to local storytelling and community engagement as central to its success at the statewide level.
Meanwhile, WCJB TV20 in Gainesville also secured multiple honours at the same ceremony, winning awards across several key journalism categories. Reporters Daja Clayton, Kayla Lewis, and Mistie Webb were recognised for excellence in economic reporting, while additional wins included political reporting, investigative work, and cold open production.
The station was also named a finalist in additional categories, underscoring a competitive showing across both editorial and production disciplines. WCJB’s recognised work included coverage focused on economic developments and political issues affecting local communities, reflecting a strong emphasis on regional reporting priorities.
The Florida Association of Broadcast Journalists awards are held annually to honour excellence across television and radio newsrooms statewide. This year’s results highlighted both stations’ continued investment in local journalism at a time when regional news organisations face increasing pressure from digital disruption and shifting audience habits.
Together, the wins for WCTV and WCJB underscore the strength of Florida’s broadcast journalism sector, with both stations recognised for their editorial depth, community-focused reporting, and adaptability across traditional and digital platforms.
