A former U.S. Army employee has been charged with unlawfully transmitting classified national defense information to a journalist, in a case that underscores ongoing concerns in the United States over the handling of sensitive military material and the legal risks tied to source-based reporting.
Federal prosecutors say Courtney Williams, a 40-year-old former defense contractor who previously held a top-secret clearance while working at Fort Bragg, repeatedly shared classified information with an identified journalist between 2022 and 2025. The material was allegedly related to national defense operations and was later referenced in published reporting and a book.
Authorities allege that Williams maintained extensive contact with the journalist over several years, including messages and phone calls in which she both provided information and later expressed concern about the volume and sensitivity of what she had disclosed. Prosecutors also claim she further shared restricted information on social media, compounding the alleged violations.
The journalist involved was not publicly named in the indictment, though reporting linked the disclosures to work by journalist Seth Harp, who authored material on alleged misconduct and internal issues within an elite special operations unit. Williams’ communications were reportedly used as a source for these publications.
The case has been brought under the Espionage Act, which governs the unauthorized retention and transmission of national defense information. If convicted, Williams could face significant prison time, reflecting the seriousness with which U.S. authorities treat leaks involving classified material.
Officials from the Department of Justice and the FBI have emphasized that individuals with security clearances are bound by strict confidentiality obligations, warning that breaches of trust can endanger national security and military personnel.
At the same time, the case has renewed debate around the boundary between whistleblowing and unlawful disclosure, particularly when leaked information is used in investigative journalism about alleged misconduct within military institutions. Press freedom advocates argue that source protection remains essential for reporting on matters of public interest, while authorities maintain that classified information cannot be lawfully disclosed regardless of intent.
The investigation remains ongoing, and further court proceedings will determine the scope of the alleged disclosures and the legal responsibility of those involved.
