The nonprofit newsroom Sahan Journal has been awarded the 2026 Columbia Journalism Award, one of the field’s most distinguished honors, recognizing its impactful reporting on immigrant and marginalized communities in the United States. The award, presented annually by Columbia Journalism School, celebrates outstanding journalistic work performed in the public interest.
Founded in 2019, Sahan Journal has built a reputation for deeply reported coverage focused on immigrants and communities of color in Minnesota. Its reporting has examined issues such as immigration enforcement, labor, education, and public safety, often highlighting stories that receive limited attention in mainstream media.
Faculty at Columbia Journalism School selected the outlet for its strong commitment to public service journalism and its ability to connect policy developments with the lived experiences of affected communities. The award specifically recognizes the newsroom’s consistent focus on accountability, accessibility, and community engagement.
Dean Jelani Cobb praised the newsroom’s work, noting that it demonstrates how journalism rooted in service can strengthen civic life and broaden representation in public discourse. He emphasized that Sahan Journal offers a model for how smaller, independent newsrooms can produce high-impact reporting.
The award will be formally presented during the Columbia Journalism School’s graduation ceremony on May 19, 2026, where Sahan Journal will also deliver the keynote address. Editorial director Chao Xiong is expected to accept the award on behalf of the organization.
Sahan Journal becomes the 69th recipient of the award, joining a select group of influential journalists and media organizations recognized since the prize was established in 1958. Notably, it is among the few newsrooms, rather than individuals, to receive the honor, underscoring the significance of its collective work.
Leaders at the organization said the recognition reflects the dedication of its reporting team and the trust placed in them by the communities they cover. They stressed that their journalism is driven by a mission to provide rigorous, contextual, and accessible reporting for audiences often underserved by traditional media.
The recognition highlights a broader shift within journalism toward community-centered reporting models that prioritize inclusion, equity, and public service. As debates continue over the sustainability and role of local news, Sahan Journal’s work is being cited as an example of how independent outlets can reshape the media landscape while maintaining high editorial standards.
