A Ukrainian photojournalist severely injured while documenting the war is receiving international support as efforts intensify to help him return to frontline reporting. George Ivanchenko, 25, lost his leg in October 2025 after a Russian first-person-view drone struck him while he was working in the Donetsk region alongside French journalist Antoni Lallican, who was killed in the attack.
Ivanchenko had been covering the war since the early stages of Russia’s full-scale invasion in 2022, contributing images to major international outlets. His injury marked a turning point, requiring extensive medical treatment and long-term rehabilitation. He was initially treated in Dnipro and Kharkiv before being transferred to a specialized rehabilitation facility in Lviv, where he underwent weeks of therapy and began adapting to life with a mechanical prosthesis.
Despite significant progress, medical specialists determined that a more advanced prosthetic solution is necessary for him to regain full mobility and resume his demanding work. The electronic prosthetic knee he requires includes adaptive technology that responds to movement in real time, offering improved balance, reduced risk of falls, and greater independence compared to standard mechanical devices.
To support his recovery, The Kyiv Independent launched a crowdfunding campaign aimed at financing the most critical component of the prosthesis. The initiative quickly gained traction, surpassing its target of $63,500 within days through more than 1,500 donations. The funds are designated primarily for the advanced knee module, considered essential for enabling Ivanchenko to return to active fieldwork.
Ivanchenko has publicly expressed gratitude for the widespread support, noting that the encouragement has strengthened his resolve during recovery. Organizers emphasized that the campaign reflects a broader commitment within the journalism community to support reporters who risk their lives documenting conflict.
His case highlights the growing dangers faced by journalists in modern warfare, particularly with the increased use of drone technology. At the same time, it underscores the role of global solidarity in helping injured reporters rebuild their lives and continue their work.
