A journalist in Nigeria’s Katsina State was targeted in a violent overnight home invasion by armed assailants, in an incident that has heightened fears over the safety of media workers and growing insecurity in the region.
According to police and local reports, gunmen stormed the journalist’s residence in the early hours of the morning, ransacking rooms, assaulting the occupant, and making off with his vehicle and mobile phones. The journalist, whose identity has not been publicly disclosed for his safety, was reportedly attacked in his compound before the assailants fled the scene.
Eyewitness accounts indicate that the gunmen acted with apparent coordination and speed, suggesting they were familiar with the journalist’s home and possessions. The victim sustained injuries during the assault and has since received medical attention. Local police confirmed they are investigating the incident, collecting evidence, and interviewing neighbours in hopes of identifying the perpetrators.
The journalist’s car, believed to be a valuable asset, and multiple mobile phones used in reporting were stolen, heightening concerns that the attack may have been targeted rather than purely opportunistic. Some colleagues and community members have called for a thorough inquiry to determine whether the journalist’s profession and recent coverage played any role in motivating the raid.
Katsina State, located in northwest Nigeria, has experienced rising insecurity in recent years, including kidnappings, banditry, and armed robberies. Journalists operating in the area have reported similar threats and harassment, creating an environment in which media practitioners face significant personal risk while covering public affairs, crime, and governance issues.
Press freedom advocates and local journalist associations condemned the attack, calling for enhanced protection measures for media workers and urging authorities to act swiftly to bring the assailants to justice. They emphasized that violence against journalists not only endangers individuals but also threatens the ability of the press to report freely and safely.
The police have appealed to members of the public to provide information that could assist in tracking down those responsible. As the investigation continues, colleagues and civil society groups are watching closely for signs that the assault was connected to the journalist’s work rather than general criminality.
