Iran’s Media Sector Faces Deepening Collapse With Layoffs, Closures and Unpaid Salaries

An American journalist has been kidnapped in central Baghdad amid intensifying violence across Iraq, in an incident that underscores the growing risks facing reporters operating in the region as geopolitical tensions deepen.
The journalist, identified as Shelly Kittleson, was abducted in broad daylight on Saadoun Street, a major thoroughfare in the Iraqi capital. Witnesses and security reports indicate that armed men forcibly seized her and pushed her into a waiting vehicle before fleeing the scene. Iraqi security forces launched an immediate pursuit, intercepting one of the vehicles involved after it crashed during the chase. However, Kittleson was transferred to a second السيارة and remains missing.
Authorities believe the kidnapping was carried out by Kataib Hezbollah, an Iran-aligned militia that operates as part of Iraq’s Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF). The group has previously been linked to kidnappings of foreign nationals, including a high-profile case involving an academic held for more than two years.
The abduction comes at a time of escalating regional conflict, with Iraq increasingly caught between Iranian-aligned militias and US interests following recent military strikes. In recent weeks, militia groups have intensified attacks on US-linked targets across Iraq, including rocket strikes on diplomatic and military facilities. In response, US forces have conducted retaliatory airstrikes, further destabilizing the fragile security environment.
Iraq’s Interior Ministry has stated that efforts are ongoing to locate Kittleson and apprehend those responsible, emphasizing its commitment to protecting foreign nationals and maintaining stability. One suspect has reportedly been arrested, but others involved in the kidnapping remain at large.
US officials confirmed they were aware of the incident and had previously warned the journalist about security threats in Iraq, urging American citizens to leave the country due to the high risk of violence and kidnapping.
Kittleson, a seasoned freelance journalist, has spent years reporting from conflict zones across the Middle East, including Iraq and Syria. Her work has focused on political instability, armed groups, and the human impact of war, often placing her in high-risk environments.
The case has raised renewed alarm among press freedom organizations, which warn that journalists in Iraq face increasing threats from both state and non-state actors. As violence escalates and militias assert greater influence, the safety of reporters covering the region continues to deteriorate, highlighting the urgent need for stronger protections and accountability mechanisms.
