Moldovan journalist Viorica Tătaru has been targeted by an online smear campaign after covering a sensitive case, prompting calls from press freedom groups for authorities to investigate and ensure accountability for harassment against media workers.
According to the Committee to Protect Journalists, Tătaru, who works for independent broadcaster TV8, became the subject of false allegations following her reporting on a March 21 memorial event for a kindergarten teacher who had died after years of alleged domestic abuse. Shortly after the coverage, a rumor began circulating online falsely claiming that Tătaru had a personal connection to individuals involved in the case.
The claim, which Tătaru has categorically denied, was widely shared on social media, triggering a wave of online abuse. She reported receiving numerous aggressive messages, insults, and attempts to intimidate her, many of them delivered through private messages and public comment sections. The campaign, she said, appeared aimed at discrediting her reporting and damaging her professional reputation.
Tătaru filed a police complaint for slander on March 25 after the harassment intensified. Although the individual who initially circulated the false claim later issued a retraction, the journalist has continued to face ongoing abuse and accusations online, underscoring the persistence of such campaigns even after misinformation is corrected.
Press freedom advocates warn that the case reflects a broader pattern of online harassment targeting journalists in Moldova, particularly in a polarized political and social environment. CPJ called on Moldovan authorities to conduct a swift and thorough investigation and to hold those responsible accountable, emphasizing that failure to act risks reinforcing a climate of impunity around digital attacks on the press.
Local media organizations have also condemned the smear campaign, stressing that disagreement with journalistic work cannot justify threats, defamation, or intimidation. They warned that such attacks not only harm individual journalists but also erode public trust in independent reporting.
The incident highlights the evolving nature of threats facing journalists, where reputational attacks and coordinated online harassment are increasingly used to silence reporting, particularly on sensitive social issues, without the need for direct physical violence.
