A Nashville-based journalist has spoken out after spending 16 days in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody, describing what she called “inhumane” treatment that has raised serious concerns among press freedom and human rights advocates.
The journalist, Estefany Rodríguez Florez, a Colombian reporter working for Nashville Noticias, was detained by ICE in early March and held across multiple facilities before being released on bond. Her case has drawn national attention, with advocacy groups warning that her detention may be linked to her reporting on immigration enforcement and ICE operations.
In interviews following her release, Rodríguez Florez described harsh and degrading conditions during her detention. She reported being placed in isolation for several days under suspicion of lice, during which she was allegedly forced to undergo humiliating sanitation procedures involving chemical substances that caused physical discomfort. She also said she was unable to contact her legal team for an extended period, further compounding the stress and uncertainty of her confinement.
Her account aligns with broader criticism of ICE detention facilities, which have long faced allegations of overcrowding, lack of sanitation, limited medical care, and abuse. Human rights organizations have repeatedly warned that such conditions may fall short of international standards for the treatment of detainees.
Rodríguez Florez was ultimately released after a judge set a $10,000 bond, but her legal case remains ongoing. U.S. authorities have argued that her detention was based on alleged visa violations, while her lawyers maintain that she has a valid work permit, a pending asylum application, and was complying with immigration procedures.
Press freedom groups, including the Committee to Protect Journalists, have expressed concern that her arrest may reflect a broader pattern in which journalists reporting on sensitive political issues face heightened risk of detention or retaliation. Her reporting had frequently focused on immigration raids and enforcement practices, placing her work at the center of ongoing public debate.
The case has intensified scrutiny of both immigration enforcement practices and the treatment of journalists in custody, highlighting the growing intersection between press freedom and immigration policy in the United States.
