Israeli forces have come under renewed criticism after a CNN news crew was detained and physically assaulted while reporting in the occupied West Bank, in an incident that has intensified concerns over the safety of journalists covering Israeli military operations and settler violence.
The confrontation took place near the Palestinian village of Tayasir, where a CNN team had traveled to report on the aftermath of an attack by Israeli settlers and the establishment of an illegal outpost in the area. According to the Foreign Press Association (FPA), Israeli soldiers aggressively confronted the journalists and nearby Palestinian civilians, despite the crew clearly identifying themselves as members of the press. The association said soldiers pointed rifles at those present, ordered the team to stop filming, and threatened to seize their equipment.
The most serious assault reportedly involved CNN photojournalist Cyril Theophilos, who was approached from behind by an Israeli soldier, placed in a chokehold, and slammed to the ground. The incident also resulted in damage to his camera equipment. CNN later confirmed the details of the encounter, while the FPA described it as a “violent assault” and a direct attack on press freedom rather than an isolated misunderstanding.
Following the backlash, the Israeli military acknowledged the seriousness of the incident and said the battalion involved had been suspended pending investigation. Israeli military spokesperson Lt Col Nadav Shoshani publicly stated that the conduct of the soldiers did not reflect the standards expected of the army and said the actions would be formally reviewed. He also apologized, saying journalists must be allowed to carry out their work freely.
The episode has added to broader alarm over the treatment of journalists reporting in the occupied Palestinian territories, where media workers have increasingly faced detention, harassment, assault, and restrictions while covering military raids, settler attacks, and civilian displacement. It also comes amid heightened international scrutiny of press conditions in the West Bank, where violence against Palestinians and obstacles to independent reporting have sharply intensified.
For press freedom advocates, the attack on the CNN crew is not just an isolated field incident, but part of a wider pattern in which journalists covering politically and militarily sensitive developments are being exposed to escalating physical danger simply for documenting events of public interest.
