Goldsmiths, University of London, has named a lecture theatre after Palestinian-American journalist Shireen Abu Akleh following a student-led campaign, in a move that underscores her enduring legacy and the global recognition of journalists killed while reporting.
The decision comes nearly four years after Abu Akleh, a prominent correspondent for Al Jazeera, was shot and killed while covering an Israeli military raid in the occupied West Bank in May 2022. Her death drew widespread international condemnation and calls for accountability, as well as renewed scrutiny over the protection of journalists in conflict zones.
Students at Goldsmiths had pushed for the tribute as a way to honor Abu Akleh’s contribution to journalism and to highlight the risks faced by reporters covering conflict and human rights issues. The campaign gained traction within the university community, eventually leading to the formal naming of the lecture theatre in her memory. Supporters said the initiative was intended not only as a memorial but also as a statement about the importance of press freedom and the role of journalism in documenting injustice.
The announcement was accompanied by events reflecting on Abu Akleh’s work and the broader challenges facing journalists worldwide. Speakers emphasized her decades-long career reporting on Palestinian life and politics, during which she became one of the most recognizable and trusted voices in the region. Her reporting, often conducted under dangerous conditions, helped bring international attention to developments on the ground.
The recognition also comes amid ongoing concerns about accountability in her killing. Despite multiple investigations and international pressure, no one has been held criminally responsible, a situation that press freedom advocates say reflects a wider pattern of impunity in attacks on journalists.
Tributes to Abu Akleh have continued across academic, media, and civil society spaces since her death, reflecting her lasting impact on the profession. The naming of the lecture theatre adds to a growing number of memorials honoring journalists killed in the line of duty, while reinforcing calls for stronger protections and accountability mechanisms.
The initiative highlights how universities and institutions are increasingly playing a role in preserving the memory of journalists and raising awareness about the dangers they face.
