A Brazilian television journalist was subjected to verbal abuse by a football fan while preparing to report live from the stadium ahead of a major championship match, highlighting ongoing concerns about hostility toward media workers covering sporting events.
The incident occurred on 9 March 2026 at Beira-Rio Stadium in Porto Alegre, shortly before the final of the Campeonato Gaúcho between rival clubs Internacional and Grêmio, a derby commonly known as the Grenal. The match is one of Brazil’s most intense football rivalries and regularly attracts large crowds and heightened emotions among supporters.
The journalist targeted was Alice Bastos Neves, a presenter and reporter for RBS TV, a regional affiliate of Brazil’s Globo network. According to reports, Neves was preparing to deliver a live broadcast near the pitch when a supporter positioned in the stands behind the reserve benches began directing insults at her.
Video footage circulating on social media showed the man gesturing offensively toward the journalist and shouting insults while she stood in front of the camera. Among the remarks, the individual used misogynistic language and called her a derogatory name, while also making obscene gestures during the incident.
The confrontation occurred just minutes before the start of the decisive match, which determines the champion of the Rio Grande do Sul state football tournament. Despite the disturbance, Neves continued her professional duties and proceeded with the broadcast as scheduled.
The incident quickly drew criticism from media professionals and viewers after the footage spread online. Journalists and press organizations in Brazil condemned the behavior and emphasized that verbal abuse and intimidation against reporters are unacceptable, particularly when journalists are performing their professional duties in public spaces.
Sports venues have increasingly become locations where journalists face hostility from fans, especially during high-stakes matches involving rival teams. Media advocates say such incidents illustrate the challenges journalists encounter while covering emotionally charged sporting events, where reporters may be exposed to harassment or aggression from spectators.
Although the incident did not escalate into physical violence, it has renewed discussions about respect for journalists and the need for stronger measures to protect media workers while they carry out live coverage at major sporting events.
Press freedom observers note that harassment, even when verbal, can create a hostile environment for reporters and contribute to broader patterns of intimidation against journalists working in public settings.
