Al Jazeera English has been awarded the 2026 Royal Television Society (RTS) Television Journalism Award for Breaking News, recognising the network’s coverage of the collapse of the Syrian government after more than a decade of conflict.
The award was presented during the RTS Television Journalism Awards ceremony in London on 4 March 2026, where judges praised the broadcaster’s reporting for its strong visual storytelling and comprehensive coverage during a rapidly unfolding international event. The panel commended the network for delivering “visually distinctive, authentic and impactful storytelling” combined with powerful interviews and on-the-ground reporting.
The award recognised Al Jazeera English’s reporting on the fall of the Assad government in Syria. This major geopolitical development marked a turning point after more than thirteen years of civil war involving regional and global powers. News teams from the network quickly mobilised to report from key locations as the situation evolved.
According to the broadcaster, Al Jazeera correspondents were among the first international journalists to reach Umayyad Square in Damascus, one of the city’s most symbolic locations, shortly after the regime’s collapse. Journalists were deployed across several parts of Syria while newsroom teams in Doha coordinated continuous coverage and analysis.
Issa Ali, Managing Director of Al Jazeera English, said the award reflects the dedication of the network’s journalists and their commitment to delivering timely reporting while providing deeper context to complex global events. He noted that the recognition highlights the network’s ability to explain not only what is happening in major international crises but also why those events matter.
Al Jazeera’s Director of News, Ibrahim Helal, described Syria as one of the most challenging stories for international journalism in recent decades. He said the network’s coverage aimed to balance speed with depth, providing audiences with both breaking developments and detailed analysis of the conflict’s political and humanitarian implications.
The Royal Television Society Journalism Awards are among the United Kingdom’s most respected broadcasting honours, recognising excellence in television journalism and reporting across a range of categories. The organisation evaluates coverage from broadcasters worldwide based on editorial quality, impact, and storytelling.
This marks the second time in five years that Al Jazeera English has won the RTS Breaking News award. The network previously received the honour in 2021 for its coverage of the Beirut port explosion, another major international news event that drew global attention.
Media observers say the latest recognition underscores Al Jazeera English’s continued influence in international broadcast journalism and its role in covering major geopolitical developments with extensive on-the-ground reporting and global newsroom coordination.
