A Spanish-language journalist in the United States has been detained by immigration authorities in Tennessee, raising concerns among press freedom advocates and immigration lawyers about the treatment of reporters and asylum seekers.
Estefany Rodríguez Florez, a Colombian journalist and reporter for the Spanish-language outlet Nashville Noticias, was arrested by agents from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on 4 March 2026 in Nashville. According to court filings and media reports, she was detained while sitting in a vehicle with her husband outside a local gym when immigration officers approached and took her into custody.
Rodríguez Florez has lived in the United States for several years after arriving on a tourist visa in 2021 and subsequently applying for political asylum. She later married a U.S. citizen and obtained a work permit while her immigration case remained under review. Her lawyers say she was in the process of adjusting her immigration status to permanent residency.
Her legal team argues that the arrest was carried out without a judicial warrant and that immigration authorities had not previously filed formal charges against her. Attorneys filed an emergency petition in federal court seeking her release, claiming she had complied with immigration procedures and had a scheduled appointment with immigration officials later in March regarding her case.
ICE officials, however, said the detention was part of a “targeted enforcement operation.” Authorities claim the journalist violated the conditions of her visa and may have missed required immigration appointments, which they said made her a potential flight risk. The agency stated she will remain in custody while her immigration proceedings continue.
Rodríguez Florez has reported extensively on immigration enforcement and has produced stories critical of ICE while working for Nashville Noticias, a media outlet serving the Spanish-speaking community in Tennessee. Her supporters argue that the arrest could have a chilling effect on journalists covering immigration issues in the United States.
Community organizations, journalists, and advocacy groups have called for her release, emphasizing her work informing immigrant communities and her ongoing legal efforts to secure asylum. Her family and supporters have also launched fundraising campaigns to help cover legal expenses as she challenges her detention.
The case has drawn national attention and reignited debate over immigration enforcement practices, due process protections, and the potential impact of such actions on press freedom in the United States.
