Ethiopian authorities have revoked the accreditation of three Reuters journalists based in Addis Ababa and canceled the news agency’s credentials to cover the 39th African Union summit scheduled in the Ethiopian capital.
The Ethiopian Media Authority (EMA) declined to renew its accreditation and withdrew summit access days after Reuters published an investigative report on February 10 alleging that Ethiopia hosted a secret training camp for fighters of Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a paramilitary group involved in Sudan’s civil war. Ethiopia has not officially explained its decision, but government sources have informally linked the revocation to the Reuters story.
The specific names of the individual journalists were not widely published in the reports, but all three were based in Reuters’ Addis Ababa bureau and were directly affected by the accreditation decision. The action also blocks Reuters from reporting on the AU summit, a major diplomatic event, raising press freedom and censorship concerns among media watchers and international observers. Reuters stated it will continue reporting independently and impartially in line with its editorial principles despite the setback.
Critics say the move reflects growing pressure on foreign correspondents in Ethiopia and could signal a tightening of media freedom in a country where independent reporting has historically faced constraints, especially on sensitive security matters.
