Two senior investigative journalists from The Guardian, Sirin Kale and Lucy Osborne, were named Women of the Year at the 2025 Women in Journalism Awards, recognising their impactful reporting on high-profile issues, including investigations into sexual misconduct allegations against actor and director Noel Clarke. Kale and Osborne were specifically commended for their work on the Guardian’s long-running investigative series that documented allegations of sexual misconduct by more than 20 women and withstood a significant libel challenge in the UK High Court. In a landmark ruling, Mrs Justice Steyn concluded that The Guardian’s defence of truth and public interest was justified, affirming the integrity of their reporting. During the awards event, Osborne dedicated the honour to the “many brave women, our sources”, who provided testimony despite legal pressure and personal difficulty. Their work has been cited by media freedom advocates as an example of rigorous, courageous journalism in the face of legal and reputational risk. ([turn0search6]
In addition to the Women of the Year recognition for Kale and Osborne, the awards also celebrated other rising talents. Malak A Tantesh, a former Guardian correspondent in Gaza, received a Rising Star award for her courageous reporting from under siege, documenting civilian experiences amid prolonged conflict. Tantesh has also been recognised at the British Journalism Awards as New Journalist of the Year and received the Marie Colvin Award for outstanding emerging journalists — honours that underscore her commitment to frontline reporting under extremely challenging conditions. The event also included lifetime achievement recognitions and awards to journalists from other major outlets, reflecting a broader celebration of female leadership in journalism worldwide.
