Veteran Cypriot journalist Maroula Violari-Iakovidou was formally recognised this week for her 70-year contribution to journalism, highlighting a remarkable career that has spanned decades of change in the media landscape. The tribute event, held in Nicosia on 23 December 2025, brought together colleagues, public figures, and media professionals who celebrated Violari-Iakovidou’s enduring impact on Cypriot journalism and her role in mentoring generations of reporters.
Born in 1945, Violari-Iakovidou began her media career in the early 1950s, making her one of the earliest female journalists in Cyprus. Over the years, she worked across print, radio, and television, establishing a reputation for tenacity, integrity, and a commitment to informed reporting. Her career took root during a period of significant social and political transformation on the island, and her reporting frequently navigated complex events, including Cyprus’s independence, intercommunal tensions, and evolving political developments.
Colleagues and former collaborators described Violari-Iakovidou as a trailblazer whose work helped shape the journalistic profession in Cyprus. Throughout her career, she held senior editorial roles, championed ethical standards, and supported the professional development of young journalists. Many noted her mentorship of early-career reporters and her influence on the country’s media institutions.
The honouring ceremony included testimonials from peers and media executives, who highlighted her resilience and adaptability in the face of technological and industry changes. Speakers also underscored her contributions to advancing women’s roles in journalism, praising her as an inspiration for female media professionals in a field long dominated by men.
In accepting the recognition, Violari-Iakovidou reflected on her decades in journalism, noting that the profession’s core purpose — “to inform the public with accuracy and fairness” — has guided her work throughout shifting political and social landscapes. She also emphasised the importance of preserving press freedom and the rule of law as foundations of democratic societies.
The tribute to Violari-Iakovidou’s career not only celebrated her individual accomplishments but also highlighted Cyprus’s journalistic heritage and the enduring value of independent reporting. Government officials and industry leaders present at the event reaffirmed their support for a free and vibrant media ecosystem.
