A new analysis by the Freedom of the Press Foundation reveals that violence against journalists in the United States spiked sharply in 2025, marking one of the most dangerous years for reporters and photojournalists covering protests and politically charged events in recent history. According to the foundation’s incident tracker, recorded assaults on media workers in 2025 nearly matched the total number of verified attacks documented over the three preceding years combined, with many incidents linked to demonstrations surrounding immigration enforcement and broader unrest. The data point to at least 170 verified assaults on journalists in 2025 alone.
Much of the surge in violence took place during protests against the Trump administration’s immigration policies, particularly demonstrations triggered by large-scale enforcement actions in cities such as Chicago and Los Angeles. Journalists covering these events reported being struck with crowd-control munitions, tear gassed, shoved, and in some cases, assaulted by law enforcement officers, despite clearly identifying themselves as members of the press. In several documented cases, photographers and reporters were injured while reporting on clashes between demonstrators and federal agents, raising serious questions about the treatment of media professionals at major protests.
Press freedom advocates and civil liberties groups have expressed concern that the increase in physical assaults on journalists reflects a broader deterioration in the safety of newsgathering in the United States. They argue that political rhetoric that frames journalists as adversaries, particularly comments used by President Donald Trump and other public figures, may contribute to a hostile atmosphere that emboldens both state and non-state actors to target reporters. While authorities and protest organisers differ on the interpretation of these incidents, advocacy groups emphasise that journalists should be able to cover public demonstrations without fear of violence or interference.
The pattern of attacks has prompted legal responses in some jurisdictions. A federal judge in Illinois issued a restraining order limiting aggressive tactics used by federal agents against journalists and protesters, and several press organisations have called for clearer protections and accountability for law enforcement actions that endanger media workers.
The sharp rise in assaults underscores ongoing challenges for press freedom in the U.S. media environment, particularly as polarization intensifies and protests remain a frequent feature of national politics. Advocates continue to urge law enforcement agencies to respect journalists’ rights and to develop protocols that safeguard reporters covering volatile events
