Threat to Journalism Sparks Outrage in Brazil
November 24, 2025November 24, 2025 – Palestine –
For over two years, Somaya Jawabra — a Palestinian journalist — has been confined to her home under open-ended house arrest following her release from prison while pregnant in November 2023.
Jawabra was initially detained by Israeli authorities in Nablus on November 5, 2023, accused of “incitement,” and released days later on bail. As part of her release conditions, she was placed under house arrest, barred from internet use, and required to remain under supervision along with members of her family.
Despite having served her original sentence, Jawabra’s house arrest has stretched far beyond the legal 18-month confinement limit. No new charges have been announced, and no court ruling has been made to lift the restrictions. Observers view the situation as an example of indefinite administrative detention without transparent legal justification.
The continued confinement has left Jawabra isolated and unable to resume professional life. Her case is now entering a second year of house arrest, underscoring what press-freedom advocates say is an ongoing pattern of repression against Palestinian media workers.
Media freedom organisations have condemned the use of extended house arrest as punishment for journalistic activity. They argue that Jawabra’s situation undermines the free press and deprives communities of independent reporting from occupied territories. The case highlights the risks faced by journalists working under occupation — especially women and mothers — and the broader impact of silencing critical voices through prolonged legal restrictions.
