Palestinian journalist Mohammed Al-Muneerawi was killed in an Israeli airstrike targeting a residential building in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza. Al-Muneerawi, who worked with the Falasteen newspaper, was among the last journalists still reporting from the devastated enclave. His death brings the number of journalists killed in Israeli attacks on Gaza since October 2023 to 256, according to the Gaza Government Media Office and medical sources.
The strike that killed Al-Muneerawi came amid a fresh wave of bombardments that have persisted despite the ceasefire declared earlier in October. Local reports indicate that over 100 people were killed in the renewed attacks, including 35 children, adding to the mounting civilian toll. Eyewitnesses described scenes of chaos as rescue workers searched through the rubble to recover bodies, underscoring the continuing humanitarian disaster in Gaza. The Gaza Health Ministry says more than 68,500 Palestinians have been killed and at least 170,000 injured since the conflict began in 2023.
Following Al-Muneerawi’s death, the Gaza Government Media Office issued a statement condemning what it called the “deliberate targeting, killing, and assassination” of Palestinian journalists by Israeli forces. It asserted that the repeated attacks on media workers form part of a systematic attempt to suppress documentation of events on the ground and prevent the global community from witnessing the scale of destruction and suffering in Gaza. The statement called on the United Nations, the International Federation of Journalists, and other global institutions to intervene and ensure accountability for these violations.
International media networks and rights organizations echoed these concerns, describing Gaza as one of the deadliest places in the world for journalists. TRT World highlighted that the killing of Al-Muneerawi exemplifies the ongoing pattern of media suppression in the enclave. Advocacy groups emphasize that journalists in Gaza face unimaginable risks — working without safety gear, shelter, or communication access — while continuing to report under siege conditions.
The loss of Mohammed Al-Muneerawi adds to a devastating toll on Gaza’s press corps, with many families of journalists also wiped out in airstrikes. His death serves as another reminder of the urgent need to protect journalists and uphold the right to report freely in times of war.
