Russian investigators from the Investigative Committee of Russia have completed an inquiry into a foiled plot to assassinate Margarita Simonyan, the editor-in-chief of the state-backed broadcaster RT.
According to official statements, the conspiracy was orchestrated by a neo-Nazi terrorist cell linked to the banned organization “National Socialism/White Power”. Investigators say the cell’s leader, Mikhail Balashov, in collaboration with co-conspirator Egor Savelyev, agreed to murder Simonyan in exchange for approximately US $50,000.
The scheme reportedly involved the collection of detailed information on Simonyan’s whereabouts and movements. Weapons and ammunition were allegedly provided by unidentified individuals in connection with the planned act. The plot was disrupted after Russia’s Federal Security Service intercepted those responsible ahead of execution.
The Investigative Committee confirmed it gathered sufficient evidence and has forwarded the case to prosecutors, paving the way for indictment and trial.
This incident is notable for its targeting of a high-profile media figure within Russia and highlights growing concerns over threats to journalists, even in major media organizations backed by the state. The case also raises questions about motivations, security culture within the media sector, and how threats against journalists are investigated and prosecuted.
