The Basic Court in Mitrovica has resumed hearings against Slavko Simić, deputy leader of the Serbian List (Srpska Lista), and Uroš Vukašinović, accused in connection with a violent assault on journalists during a June 2023 protest in Leposavić, northern Kosovo.
According to the prosecution’s indictment, Simić is charged with inciting protesters to target journalists and participating in a mob intent on committing criminal acts, categorized under hooliganism. Vukašinović, meanwhile, is accused of direct assault and the same crowd-related offenses.
During the attacks on June 16, 2023, reports state Albanian journalists were struck by protestors using stun grenades, bricks, paint, and blows — resulting in serious injuries for two reporters. The assault allegedly occurred during unrest sparked by the visit of a Kosovo government minister to Leposavić.
The trial’s progress has encountered delays. The initial session, scheduled for September 18, was postponed when defense attorneys claimed they had not received all the required documentation from prosecutors. In court, Simić has denied involvement, asserting his political mission has always been peace and dialogue, and disavowed any connection to the violence.
Prosecutors maintain evidence suggests coordination: they claim that Simić orchestrated incitement and that the crowd was mobilized to attack media teams. Observers see this trial as a significant test for press protection and judicial accountability in Kosovo.
As media rights groups monitor developments closely, the outcome may influence the safety and freedoms of journalists in a region where reporting on political tensions continues to carry substantial risk.
