At least 36 Palestinians, including journalists, were injured in a wave of violence involving Israeli troops and illegal settlers around Nablus in the occupied West Bank. The Palestinian Health Ministry reported that among the injured, two were struck by live ammunition, while others sustained bruises, cuts, and suffocation from tear gas and physical abuse.
The attacks unfolded in Beita, Huwara, and Deir Sharaf—areas known for olive cultivation—where settlers reportedly assaulted olive pickers and media crews, burning vehicles and hurling stones. AFP photographer Jaafar Ishtayeh was among those targeted: his car was set on fire, and he suffered multiple bruises. “If I hadn’t managed to escape, they would have killed me,” he said.
Also hurt were Wahaj Bani Moufleh, and reporters Yazan Hamayel and Sujja al-Alami, the latter two suffering from tear gas inhalation. Eyewitnesses said up to 70 settlers, equipped with sticks and stones, joined the attack, while Israeli military forces fired stun grenades and tear gas at nearby residents.
Ishtayeh disclosed that soldiers present at the scene did not intervene to restrain the settlers. He described being struck in the back, arm, and hand before being escorted to a hospital and released later in the afternoon.
The assault comes amid heightened tensions during the olive harvest season, a time when settler incursions frequently surge. The violence underscores the precarious position of journalists operating in conflict zones and the intensifying dangers for civilians in the West Bank.
If you want, I can prepare a follow-up article focusing on how media organisations are responding or what international bodies are saying.
