October 3, 2025Athens Democracy Prize celebrates Levy’s fearless reporting and moral clarity in the face of war and censorship.
The City of Athens has awarded its prestigious Athens Democracy Prize to Israeli journalist Gideon Levy, honoring decades of bold reporting that confronts injustice and amplifies silenced voices.
Levy, a senior writer for Haaretz and author of the acclaimed column Twilight Zone, has spent his career documenting the human impact of Israel’s occupation and exposing the suffering endured by Palestinians. At the Athens Democracy Forum, Mayor Haris Doukas described Levy’s journalism as “precise, unwavering, and essential for truth.”
In his acceptance speech, Levy dedicated the prize to journalists in Gaza, calling them “the eyes, conscience, and chroniclers of reality.” He also condemned Israel’s military actions, describing them as “genocide,” and criticized Western media for perpetuating narratives that erase Palestinian humanity. Levy urged Greek authorities not to remove pro-Palestinian graffiti, arguing that public expression is a vital part of democracy and moral witness.
The Athens Democracy Prize, established to recognize individuals who defend democratic values through their work, praised Levy’s “uncompromising dedication to peace, justice, and freedom of the press.”
Levy’s recognition stands as a powerful statement amid growing global scrutiny of media coverage of the Gaza Strip. His reporting, often met with backlash in Israel, remains a cornerstone of ethical journalism—seeking not favor or comfort, but the truth.
By honoring Gideon Levy, Athens sends a clear message: that moral courage and journalistic integrity are indispensable pillars of democracy, even in times of war.
