Veteran journalist and television anchor Imtiaz Mir has passed away, succumbing to injuries sustained in a shooting in Karachi’s Malir district last week.
Mir, who worked with Metro 1 News and hosted the show “Aaj Ki Baat With Imtiaz Mir,” was en route home in a car driven by his brother when assailants on two motorcycles opened fire. The attack, which occurred in the Malir Kala Board area, left him critically wounded along with his brother. Both were taken to Liaquat National Hospital, but Mir’s condition deteriorated, and he died during treatment.
Authorities have registered an FIR under sections of the Pakistan Penal Code linked to attempted murder, with named suspects including a man and his two sons from Jacobabad. Prosecutors and law enforcement claim the attack may stem from an ongoing land dispute in Mir’s native area, yet details remain unverified and under investigation.
Political figures and press groups have reacted swiftly. Sindh Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah expressed grief and directed police leadership to ensure the perpetrators are arrested. Senior provincial ministers echoed the sentiment, praising Mir as a “fearless journalist” who focused on public issues.
Journalist associations, particularly the Karachi Union of Journalists, have condemned the killing as a grave assault on press freedom, demanding accountability and stronger protections for media workers.
Pakistan has long been ranked among the more dangerous countries for those in journalism, with many reporters facing threats, violence, and legal harassment. Mir’s death brings renewed urgency to calls for structural reforms and enforcement mechanisms to safeguard journalists in high-risk environments.
As investigations proceed, attention will focus on whether justice is delivered or whether this case becomes another in the long list of unsolved attacks on Pakistan’s press.
