Bogotá, September 23, 2025 — The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has called on Peruvian authorities to launch a full investigation into violent attacks against 16 journalists covering anti-government protests in Lima on September 20 and 21. The press advocacy group urged officials to ensure that those responsible are held to account, and to safeguard journalists’ rights to report on public-interest issues without fear.
The incidents took place during large demonstrations against President Dina Boluarte. Police forces deployed rubber pellets, tear gas, and projectiles to disperse crowds, the National Association of Journalists of Peru (ANP) reported. Journalists say escape routes were blocked and that authorities confiscated phones.
At least seven reporters sustained injuries from police fire. Among those hit were Exitosa Noticias reporter Jahaira Pacheco and camera operator Percy Grados, both treated for wounds to their legs. Other injured journalists included freelancers and correspondents from Ojo Público, Hildebrandt en sus Trece, and Reuters—Anthony Marina and Néstor Galarza.
CPJ’s Latin America program coordinator, Cristina Zahar, condemned the targeting of journalists during protests, stressing that covering demonstrations is part of their public-interest duty. She stated: “Journalists covering demonstrations should never be targeted … We urge Peruvian authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into these alarming attacks on the press.”
Efforts by CPJ to gather comments from the Peruvian National Police went unanswered at the time of reporting.
These attacks serve as a stark reminder of the dangers faced by journalists in repressive environments, where covering civil unrest exposes them to physical harm and harassment. CPJ’s demand for accountability and protective measures highlights the need to defend press freedom, especially during periods of political tension and public protest.
