Rawalpindi Police registered an FIR against Aleema Khan (sister of PTI founder Imran Khan), PTI party lawyer Naeem Panjutha, and approximately 40 PTI supporters following a violent incident targeting a journalist outside Adiala Jail during a media interaction after a Toshakhana-II case hearing.
The complaint was lodged by Tayyab Baloch, President of the Supreme Court Press Association. According to Baloch, he was reporting outside the jail at around 3:55 pm alongside other media personnel when the incident occurred. Baloch had posed a question to Aleema Khan about her alleged property holdings in the United States, prompting Panjutha to reportedly shout: “Teach him a lesson for questioning Aleema about properties.” At that moment, 35–40 people grabbed Baloch, threw him to the ground, and started beating him.
During the assault, an unknown assailant snatched Baloch’s mobile phone and smashed his microphone, and other journalists who tried to intervene were also attacked. Baloch described the assault as premeditated, alleging that PTI supporters had previously circulated his photos and rumours on social media and that the violence was a coordinated retaliation.
The FIR includes charges under multiple sections of the Pakistan Penal Code:
- Section 147 – Rioting
- Section 149 – Every member of an unlawful assembly
- Section 382 – Theft after preparation causing death, hurt, or restraint
- Section 427 – Mischief causing damage
- Section 506 – Criminal intimidation.
In response, Naeem Panjutha called the FIR a “fake case” aimed at discrediting him and Aleema Khan.
The incident triggered sharp condemnation: Information Minister Attaullah Tarar called the assault “unacceptable,” asserting that it stemmed solely from a difference of opinion and promising strict action. Political figures like Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari, Nadeem Afzal Chan, and Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab also condemned the violence. Karachi Press Club President Fazil Jamili decried the pattern, warning that such attacks must be actively discouraged: “politics and journalism rise & fall together.”
