Robert Telles was found guilty of murdering journalist Jeff German; sentenced to life with parole eligibility, justice served.
On September 3, 2022, Las Vegas Review-Journal investigative reporter Jeff German, 69, was found stabbed outside his home. His coverage had scrutinized misconduct in the office of Clark County Public Administrator Robert Telles, who lost a June 2022 primary after German’s reporting. Investigators quickly focused on Telles, citing surveillance of a matching vehicle and DNA evidence linking him to the scene.
A jury convicted Telles of first-degree murder on August 28, 2024, after an 11-day trial where prosecutors argued revenge was the motive. On October 16, 2024, a judge sentenced him to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 28 years. Telles maintains his innocence and said he would appeal.
The case also set important First Amendment markers. In October 2023, the Nevada Supreme Court held that a reporter’s privilege survives a journalist’s death and found the district court’s search protocol for German’s devices violated that privilege. The ruling followed a sustained legal fight by the Review-Journal and press-freedom groups to prevent broad law-enforcement access to German’s phone and computers
In 2025, the legal battle shifted to appeals. In late August, Telles petitioned the Nevada Supreme Court to overturn his conviction, arguing trial errors and evidentiary issues. The filing underscores that, even after a verdict and sentence, accountability cases involving attacks on journalists often continue for years.
German’s career was defined by long, careful reporting on power and corruption in Nevada. His killing remains a stark reminder that local investigative journalism can carry serious risk, and that protecting reporters and their sources is integral to public accountability.
