During ongoing anti-immigration demonstrations across the UK, GB News reporter Sophie Reaper and her camera operator were confronted with physical aggression from a protester in Whitehall, London. The incident occurred amid heightened tensions as protestors targeted the media presence, some chanting “GB News, off our streets” upon recognizing the broadcaster’s team. Video footage shows a man slapping the hand of the GB News camera operator, raising serious concerns about journalist safety while covering these volatile events
Greater Manchester and other regions have similarly seen volatile anti-migrant protests as part of a broader wave of demonstrations that began on 13 July 2025. These protests, spurred by community fears over migrant housing in hotels, have spread to towns like Altrincham, Newcastle, and Manchester, occasionally resulting in clashes and police intervention.
In response to the attack on its crew, GB News confirmed that a formal police investigation has been launched. Officials are reviewing footage and interviewing witnesses to determine the appropriate course of action.
This incident spotlights the growing hostility journalists face while covering contentious public protests and highlights the importance of ensuring safe press freedom, even amidst civil unrest and anti-immigration sentiment.
