Al Jazeera Media Network has issued a powerful condemnation of what it calls an Israeli “campaign of incitement” against its journalists in Gaza—particularly correspondent Anas Al‑Sharif. The network warns that such rhetoric is a blatant effort to justify targeting reporters working in conflict zones such as the Gaza Strip.
The statement, issued on 25 July 2025, accuses Israeli military officials of repeatedly branding its journalists as terrorists or Hamas operatives. Al Jazeera rejects these allegations as entirely baseless and frames them as part of a broader strategy to silence independent reporting in Gaza, where many international media outlets are barred from operating.
Al Sharif has been singled out via claims by Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee, who reposted video content alleging that he is affiliated with Hamas’s military wing. The network flatly rejects those allegations, as does the international press freedom community.
The Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) has flagged the situation as extremely dangerous, warning that the incitement has escalated to the point where Al‑Sharif’s life is in “acute” peril. CPJ has condemned the Israeli claims as defamatory and insisted on urgent protective measures for the journalist.
In its press release, Al Jazeera holds the Israeli occupation authorities fully responsible for the safety of its staff in Gaza. It urges international governments and organizations to intervene and provide protection to journalists working under threat and hardship, including starvation, violence, and lack of necessities.
The network underscores the essential role its reporters play as witnesses on the ground—especially in the northern Gaza Strip, where they remain among the few journalists documenting humanitarian suffering firsthand.
This incident forms part of a wider pattern of threats and violence against journalists in Gaza. Since the conflict began in October 2023, more than 170 journalists, including several from Al Jazeera, have been killed, often following unverifiable accusations of terrorist affiliations
