A devastating Israeli strike overnight claimed the lives of freelance journalist Wala al-Jaabari, her husband, and their five children as they slept in their Gaza City home. The Al‑Shaer family, unable to eat for days, went to bed hungry before their home was hit amid a wave of more than 100 airstrikes and gunfire across Gaza in 24 hours. The health ministry confirmed at least 111 starvation-related deaths in that period and an ongoing hunger emergency throughout the enclave.
Local sources reported their corpses were removed in white shrouds, stained by blood, with relatives confirming that the children had not eaten before the strike. One grieving cousin, Amr al‑Shaer, said, “We dug them out of the rubble.” Israel said it struck 120 “terrorist infrastructure” sites in Gaza during the operation, but did not comment on the civilian home hit. Despite food stocks waiting at the border, Israeli restrictions continue to block or severely delay aid entry, worsening starvation.
This strike comes amid international outcry over Israel’s handling of Gaza’s humanitarian crisis. Aid agencies and the World Health Organisation are warning of mass starvation, while diplomatic efforts are underway, including a proposed 60-day ceasefire negotiated by U.S., Qatari, and Egyptian mediators.
Wala al-Jaabari’s death raises the toll of media workers killed in Gaza, further compounding a crisis marked by hunger and conflict. Her killing joins a tragic pattern of journalists lost while covering the war, reflecting the dire consequences of Gaza’s collapsed livelihood and persistent violence.
