Al Jazeera Media Network has issued an urgent appeal for the global journalistic community, press freedom organizations, and legal bodies to take decisive action to protect journalists in Gaza, following AFP’s recent evacuation plea. The network reports that after more than 21 months of Israeli bombardment and blockade, Gaza’s nearly 2 million residents, including its journalists, are facing forced starvation and relentless targeting.
Al Jazeera cites heartbreaking social media posts from July 19, like that of correspondent Anas AlShariff, who shared:
“I haven’t stopped covering for a moment in 21 months … I am drowning in hunger, trembling in exhaustion, and resisting the fainting that follows me every moment… Gaza is dying. And we die with it.”
These journalists have been working under life-threatening conditions, with officers targeting them and families unable to flee due to restricted evacuation options. Al Jazeera warns that without swift global intervention to ensure evacuation, humanitarian aid and legal measures, “there may be no one left to tell our stories,” marking a critical failure in the protection of press freedoms.
This call comes shortly after AFP publicly implored Israeli authorities to allow the evacuation of its freelance journalists and their families from Gaza, emphasizing mounting food shortages, lack of clean water, and extreme risk to life.
Press freedom advocates note that Gaza has become the world’s most dangerous conflict zone for journalists, with hundreds killed or injured since October 2023. Al Jazeera’s appeal underscores the urgent need for coordinated international pressure to secure safe passage, provide immediate aid, hold perpetrators accountable, and ensure that journalists can continue their essential work without dying from hunger or violence.
