The International Federation of Journalists (IFJ) has raised urgent concerns about mounting threats to press freedom in Pakistan, citing a sharp rise in violence, harassment, and legal intimidation targeting media professionals. According to the IFJ’s latest Pakistan Press Freedom Report, shared with the Chief Justice of Pakistan, 34 violations were recorded between May 1, 2024, and April 30, 2025. These included 7 targeted killings, 8 incidents of non-fatal violence, and several cases involving defamation, threats, arrests, and institutional assaults.
The IFJ warned that these escalating violations are fostering a climate of fear that silences independent journalism and undermines democratic processes, particularly in the lead-up to elections. The group called on the government to fulfil its constitutional duty to protect journalists and uphold the public’s right to information.
The federation also urged international watchdogs to closely monitor the situation and pressure Pakistani authorities to end impunity. The report underscores a pressing need for systemic reforms to ensure journalist safety and media freedom in Pakistan. Without intervention, the IFJ warns that further deterioration could irreparably damage the country’s democratic fabric.
