In a powerful statement delivered during an event in Lima, Peru, Pope Leo XIV reaffirmed the Catholic Church’s commitment to a zero-tolerance policy on abuse, vowing to address not only sexual abuse but also spiritual, psychological, and institutional abuse. Speaking at a theatrical performance honoring investigative journalist Paola Ugaz—who helped expose abuse within the Peruvian religious group Sodalitium Christianae Vitae—Pope Leo emphasized that abuse in any form is an affront to human dignity and the mission of the Church.
Pope Leo declared that “no abuse can be tolerated,” urging Church leaders to create transparent processes, support victims, and foster a culture of prevention. He also praised journalists as critical allies in the pursuit of truth and justice, describing press freedom as essential to democracy. “A free press is not the enemy of faith,” he said. “It is a partner in exposing sin and protecting the vulnerable.” He called on governments and societies to defend journalists and ensure their safety, especially those reporting on powerful institutions.
His remarks were met with cautious optimism. Survivors and advocacy groups welcomed his strong words and symbolic gestures, noting that his previous actions—such as efforts to dismantle the Sodalitium—demonstrate a willingness to act. However, organizations like SNAP (Survivors Network of those Abused by Priests) criticized his past, particularly his handling of abuse cases during his time in Chicago, including allegedly housing a suspended priest near a school. They argue that enforceable policies, mandatory reporting, global truth commissions, and meaningful reparations must back words.
Pope Leo’s address marks one of the most forceful condemnations of abuse by a pontiff in recent memory, especially in tandem with an explicit defense of journalism. His dual focus on victim protection and media freedom signals a broader effort to restore credibility within a wounded Church. However, many believe that only sustained, transparent reform—and accountability at all levels—will determine whether this marks a turning point or merely another unfulfilled promise.
