Nearly eight years after the brutal murder of Maltese investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia, several key figures involved in the assassination have been convicted and sentenced, marking a significant development in one of Europe’s most shocking attacks on press freedom.
Caruana Galizia, known for her fearless reporting on political corruption, money laundering, and organized crime in Malta, was killed on October 16, 2017, when a car bomb detonated under her vehicle near her home. The assassination sent shockwaves through the international community, sparking widespread condemnation and calls for justice.
In the latest court rulings, two brothers, George and Alfred Degiorgio, pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 40 years in prison each for planting and detonating the bomb that killed Caruana Galizia. Another accomplice, Vincent Muscat, had earlier admitted his role in the murder and received a 15-year sentence in exchange for cooperating with authorities.
Additionally, in a separate but related trial, two men — Adrian and Robert Agius — were sentenced to life imprisonment for supplying the bomb used in the assassination. Their sentencing underscores the broader network involved in planning and executing the attack, which has been linked to powerful business and political interests in Malta.
These convictions represent a milestone in Malta’s long and troubled pursuit of justice in this case, which has exposed deep-rooted corruption at the highest levels of government. The investigation led to the resignation of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat in 2019, after close ties between government officials and the accused masterminds came to light.
While these verdicts offer some closure, press freedom advocates and Caruana Galizia’s family continue to push for full accountability, insisting that those who ordered and financed the assassination must also face justice. The case remains a grim reminder of the dangers journalists face when exposing corruption and holding power to account.
Daphne Caruana Galizia’s legacy endures, inspiring ongoing global efforts to protect journalists and defend freedom of the press.
