Eric Spofford, founder and former CEO of Granite Recovery Centers, a prominent addiction treatment organization in New Hampshire, has been indicted in a case involving harassment and vandalism targeting journalist Lauren Chooljian of New Hampshire Public Radio (NHPR) and her colleagues. The case stems from a series of events following a 2022 investigative report by Chooljian that included allegations of sexual misconduct and financial impropriety against Spofford.
Shortly after the report’s publication, Chooljian’s home, her editor’s home, and her parents’ house were all vandalized—windows smashed and bricks thrown, one of which had a threatening message attached. Investigators have now linked these acts to a conspiracy orchestrated by Spofford, who allegedly hired private investigators and middlemen to locate and intimidate Chooljian.
In June 2025, Spofford was officially charged in federal court with conspiracy, witness tampering, and aiding and abetting acts of intimidation. Court documents allege that Spofford and others tried to send a message to silence or retaliate against the journalists responsible for reporting on his business dealings. Spofford has denied any involvement and pleaded not guilty.
The indictment reveals a disturbing abuse of power, leveraging personal wealth and resources to target members of the press. Federal prosecutors stated that Spofford paid thousands of dollars for services intended to track and frighten Chooljian. The campaign included not only physical vandalism but also surveillance, with hired individuals reportedly staking out Chooljian’s home and movements.
The charges have raised concerns about press freedom and journalist safety, especially in the context of investigative reporting that uncovers misconduct by powerful individuals. NHPR and its journalists have continued to report on the case and have received support from national journalism organizations.
This case is now moving forward in the federal judicial system, where Spofford faces significant prison time if convicted. It serves as a stark reminder of the threats faced by investigative journalists and the potential legal consequences for those who attempt to retaliate through intimidation or violence.
