May 2025 has emerged as one of the darkest months for journalists in Gaza since the war began in October 2023. At least seven media workers were killed in a single month, adding to the grim toll of 221 journalists who have lost their lives in the conflict, according to the Palestinian Journalists Protection Center (PJPC).
The deaths were not isolated incidents. Each case paints a chilling picture of journalists caught in, or directly targeted by, military strikes. Moataz Rajab, a correspondent for Al-Quds Al-Youm, was killed on May 28 when an Israeli airstrike hit a civilian vehicle on Al-Nafaq Street in Gaza City. Just days earlier, Hassan Majdi Abu Warda, director of Barq Gaza News Agency, was killed in an airstrike on his home in northern Gaza.
Other journalists who died in May include Abdel Rahman Al-Abadleh, Ahmad Al-Helou of Quds Network, Hassan Sammour and his family, and prominent photojournalist Hassan Aslih, who was struck while receiving treatment at the Nasser Medical Complex. Yahya Sobeih was also killed earlier in the month in a strike on Gaza City.
These deaths underscore the escalating dangers for journalists in Gaza, many of whom continue reporting despite lacking protective equipment, working without electricity or communications, and enduring personal trauma and loss. The PJPC and other press freedom organizations stress that these killings are not accidental but part of a larger pattern of intimidation and silencing.
The UN has expressed concern over the deteriorating conditions for journalists in Gaza, calling for independent investigations and accountability for attacks on the press. Yet, meaningful international action remains limited, and journalists continue to work under life-threatening conditions.
May’s toll is a stark reminder that journalism in Gaza now comes with a deadly price. As journalists risk their lives to document the human impact of the conflict, the international community faces mounting pressure to protect them. Without urgent intervention, the death toll may climb even higher, taking with it the voices needed to tell Gaza’s story.
