May: A Deadly Month for Journalists in Gaza
May 31, 2025May 30, 2025 – Palestine/Israel –
Palestinian journalist Moataz Mohammed Rajab was killed on May 28, 2025, during an Israeli airstrike in Gaza City, bringing the total number of media workers killed since the war began in October 2023 to at least 221. Rajab, a cameraman and video editor for Al-Quds Today TV, died when an Israeli missile struck the civilian car he was traveling in on An-Nafaq Street. Four others were also killed in the same attack.
Rajab was on his way to report on the aftermath of previous bombings when his vehicle was hit. Eyewitnesses described the strike as sudden and precise, leaving little chance for survival. His press colleagues mourned him as a dedicated journalist who had worked tirelessly to document the destruction and human suffering in Gaza despite constant danger.
The Gaza Government Media Office strongly condemned the killing, calling it part of Israel’s “systematic campaign” to silence Palestinian voices and erase independent media coverage from Gaza. Officials urged international institutions, including the United Nations and press freedom groups, to speak out and demand accountability for what they described as deliberate targeting of journalists.
International rights organizations, including Reporters Without Borders and the Committee to Protect Journalists, have repeatedly raised alarms over the unprecedented death toll among Palestinian media workers. Since the war began, Gaza has become one of the deadliest places in the world for journalists, with no international reporters allowed inside and local journalists left to cover the war at enormous personal risk.
Rajab’s death highlights the perilous conditions under which Palestinian journalists operate. He joins a growing list of reporters, photographers, and camera operators who have died in the line of duty, many while wearing clearly marked press vests. These deaths have sparked urgent calls for international investigations into violations of press protections under international humanitarian law.
Moataz Rajab is remembered not just as a casualty of war, but as a symbol of courage and truth-telling in one of the world’s most dangerous conflict zones.
