The Palestinian National Council (PNC), the highest decision-making body of the Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO), has issued a fervent appeal for the protection of journalists in the face of escalating Israeli attacks in Gaza and the occupied West Bank. This call comes as the toll on media professionals continues to rise, with at least 211 Palestinian journalists reported killed since October 2023.
In a statement released ahead of Arab Media Day, the PNC condemned the deliberate targeting of journalists, asserting that such assaults aim to silence the Palestinian narrative. “The Israeli occupation is fully responsible for its crimes against journalists,” the council declared, emphasizing that these attacks are a calculated effort to suppress the voice of Palestine.
The PNC’s appeal aligns with broader international concerns regarding the safety of journalists in conflict zones. Notably, the United Nations Secretary-General has called for the protection of journalists and an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, highlighting the critical role of media professionals in documenting the realities on the ground.
The ongoing conflict has also drawn attention to the dire circumstances faced by journalists operating in Gaza. According to the Palestinian Journalists Syndicate, many media workers have lost their homes and family members, yet continue to report under perilous conditions. The Syndicate has appealed for international support to enable journalists to persist in their vital work.
The PNC’s call underscores the urgent need for international mechanisms to safeguard journalists and uphold press freedom. As the conflict persists, the protection of media professionals remains a pressing concern, integral to ensuring that the realities of the situation are accurately and comprehensively reported to the world.
