Two Palestinians, including journalist Nagham Al-Zayt, were injured as Israeli military forces carried out another raid in the northern West Bank city of Tulkarem. Al-Zayt, who was covering the ongoing Israeli military operation, sustained shrapnel injuries to her right hand. Another 20-year-old Palestinian man was shot in the face during the incursion and was rushed to the hospital for treatment, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent.
The incident occurred amid Israel’s intensifying military operations in the West Bank, which have expanded significantly since the onset of the Gaza conflict on October 7, 2023. In Tulkarem, Israeli forces have conducted repeated raids for over a week, leading to numerous casualties, injuries, and widespread displacement. These operations mirror similar large-scale military activities seen in Jenin, where at least 16 Palestinians were killed and around 50 injured in a single week of violence between January 21 and 28.
The situation in the West Bank has grown increasingly volatile as Israeli forces escalate operations in refugee camps and civilian areas. The Palestinian Health Ministry reports that since the Gaza war began, more than 880 Palestinians have been killed and over 6,700 injured in the West Bank alone. The military’s tactics, which include live fire, heavy weaponry, and incursions into densely populated areas, have drawn significant concern from international observers.
Al-Zayt’s injury also highlights the growing risks journalists face while reporting from conflict zones. Press freedom organizations have raised alarm over the targeting of media workers, many of whom are marked as the press while covering these dangerous events. This incident adds to a troubling pattern of violence against Palestinian journalists, further restricting independent reporting from the occupied territories.
As the violence intensifies across multiple fronts, human rights groups and international organizations continue to call for accountability, the protection of civilians, and the safeguarding of journalists operating under increasingly dangerous conditions. The injuries sustained by Al-Zayt and the civilian in Tulkarem serve as another stark reminder of the escalating toll on non-combatants amid the ongoing conflict.
